The DEMF 2007 lineup highs and lows

March 9, 2007

Paxahau is in their second year of throwing DEMF (the Detroit Electronic Music Festival) — three four days of non-stop music partying beneath the hot, humid Michigan sun. Ahh … has it already been a year?

The partial lineup has been posted, and everyone is excited about hot acts like Claude VonStroke, DJ Godfather, Luciano, Mathew Jonson and expected players like Matthew Dear, Richie Hawtin, Ryan Elliott, John Acquaviva and Stacey Pullen.

Detroiter Seth Troxler is a recent add to the list. He’s another Detroit DJ we’ll be losing to Berlin this Summer, and his name is exploding all over our fair motor city.

As for the lackluster acts. Well, Loco Dice, The Wizard Jeff Mills, Kevin Saunderson and Ryan Crosson have all had disappointing performances in Detroit recently — let’s see how they turn it out for the festival.

Props must be given to Paxahau for releasing any information about the festival more than three weeks in advance this year.

As always, last-minute acts will be added. Hopefully Paxahau will be able to stray just a bit from their Minimal roots to create some diversity of music in the fest — a little Ghetto Tek never hurt nobody — (keep the no-trance policy, please) stay posted.

Now let’s see about lowering the ticket price ($25 or $40) and booking Detroit’s high priestess of ghetto Aaron-Carl.

And would it be too much to ask for Marc Houle, Heartthrob and Magda?

You obviously did not attend the Jeff Mills show at 5th Ave. Many people considered that the finest show they had seen in YEARS by anyone.

actually, that IS the show that I attended and I concur…i would rather swallow broken glass then waste 20 bucks on some burned out hasbeen of a DJ. If i want to hear hits from the 90’s poorly mixed I can turn on internet radio or watch some noobie play his brother’s old dollar techno. The show was a total snooze fest and Mills didn’t look like he gave a fuck about the crowd. He’s the wizard alright, until you look behind the curtain.

Actually I did attend that show.

The only thing I was left with was the desire for my $20 back.

The (Mills) show was hyped up by advertising that Mills would be on 4 turntables. I only saw 3 set-up, and I never once saw mixing more than 2 at a time.

His music seemed stale. Just because you’re an originator of techno doesn’t mean you can just play old sets.

He did not engage with the crowd, he seemed like he was masterbating on stage. It was weird too, because the crowd seemed so into it.

Now Marc Houle’s show at Esko on Feb. 23. I would regard that set as one of the finest. Anyone else agree?
